A note on my posting
Some people may have noticed that my posts are appearing at odd times, or have slightly different formatting. The reason for this is that I am currently in China, where I am spending some time teaching at Huanggang Normal University and Xuzhou Institute of Technology. When I've finished teaching, I will take some time off before attending the WCCI 2014 conference in Beijing, where I'm chairing a special session.
While everyone here is very friendly and go out of their way to be helpful, there is one thing I dislike about China: the internet censorship. This means that I can't access Blogger directly to post or check updates before they post, so I have to do it via email. So, I sometimes make mistakes with the formatting, and I can't schedule updates to go live at certain times like I usually do.
I'm also updating Twitter via email, which is a bit easier to do, so you can follow me there if you aren't already. Please bear with me, I will be back in New Zealand mid-July and posts will return to their more usual schedule.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on “New Trends of Learning in Computational Intelligence”
A special issue of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine (IEEE CIM) will be dedicated to New Trends of Learning in Computational Intelligence. Prospective uthors are invited to submit their original unpublished research and application contributions. Comprehensive tutorial and survey papers can also be considered for this special issue.
Over the past few decades, conventional computational intelligence techniques faced severe bottlenecks in terms of algorithmic learning. Particularly, in areas of big data computation, brain science, cognition and reasoning, it is almost inevitable that intensive human intervention and time consuming trial and error efforts need to be employed before any meaningful observations can be obtained. The recent development of emerging computational intelligence techniques such as extreme learning machines (ELM) and fast solutions shed some light upon how to effectively deal with these computational bottlenecks.
Based on the observations that increasing correlation can be found among apparently different theories from different fields, as well as the increasing evidence of convergence between computational intelligence techniques and biological learning mechanisms, this special issue seeks to promote novel research investigations in computational intelligence bridging among related areas.
Topics of interest for this special issue include but are not limited to:
- Theoretical foundations and algorithms:
- Extreme learning machines (ELM), No-Prop algorithms and random kitchen sinks
- Real-time learning, reasoning and cognition
- Sequential / incremental learning
- Clustering and feature extraction / selection
- Closed form and non-closed form solutions
- Multiple hidden layers solutions and random networks
- Parallel and distributed computing / cloud computing
- Fast implementation of deep learning
- Applications
- Biologically-inspired natural language processing
- Big data analytics
- Cognitive science / computation
- Autonomous systems

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Real-Time Strategy Games IEEE TCIAIG
In recent years game AI for real-time strategy (RTS) games has become an active research area. Producing AI players (bots) which are able to consistently beat even average human players (without cheating) in these games has risen as a real challenge. Thus, in RTS games, player satisfaction cannot simply be achieved by “downgrading” the AI, as is possible in man other game genres. In consequence, stronger AI players make the game more interesting.
Recent RTS AI (e.g. StarCraft) tournaments have stimulated the creation of new bots with new concepts and architectures and led to a greatly increased number of publications addressing some of the many open AI problems in RTS games. For example, RTS game aspects such as resource management, scouting, real-time strategic and tactical planning, and others, call for the application of innovative CI/AI methods. This special issue welcomes high-quality work in the area of real-time strategy games. Topics include but are not limited to:
- Adversarial real-time planning in RTS games
- Bot reactiveness: learning and adaptation in RTS bots
- Build order optimization and its relation to strategies and the metagame
- Scouting and uncertainty management in RTS games
- Path-finding and group movement
- Combat simulation and AI for micro-management
- Opponent modeling, especially strategy prediction
- Complexity measurements for RTS games
- Communication and cooperation with and within RTS bots
- New forms of interaction with the player
- AI adaptations for more satisfying play experience
- Difficulty adaptation, ability-based matching, ladders, and tournaments
- Automated level/unit/map design for RTS games
- Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games: the next generation of real-time strategy?
